I taught this online course from Fall 2002 to Spring 2006 (taught every semester), as a part-time lecturer. Soon after inheriting it, I redesigned the content and re-structured the course elements for WebCT.

In addition to updating and making the course content more visual, I added a graded Discussion Board component to help establish online community. Establishing community is extremely important to an online course, especially when it comes to maintaining student accountability. The class also participated in a Wiki and optional weekly chat sessions, as a way of encouraging community. I also added weekly quizzes to help keep the students on track and accountable to the reading material. Because the drop-out rate tended to be high in this course, adding these elements helped.
