Assignment 3
Points: 20
Due Date: 2/20
Reading: Tutorial 8 session 8.1
Introduction:
In this assignment, you will participate in online chat with your classmates and instructor. Live chat is a relatively new, increasingly popular medium for communication on the Internet.
Questions from the reading assignment:
- Is online chat just the live exchange of text? Why or why not?
- What two types of software can be used to connect to an IRC network?
- What is the purpose of an IRC bot?
- What does GUI stand for?
Yahoo! Messenger
- Begin by going to http://chat.yahoo.com
- Click on the link "Sign up now to enjoy Yahoo!", and fill out the form for a Yahoo! id.
- Once you have successfully submitted the form and have your id go to http://messenger.yahoo.com/.
- The Yahoo!Messenger page has different downloads on the left hand side of the page.
Select the one that suits your computer the best, download, and install it. You can find help at http://help.yahoo.com/help/mesg/index.html.
- Now that you have your Yahoo!Messenger id, send a message to the class mailing list, telling us your Yahoo! id.
- Next, add my id to your friends list. My Yahoo!id is csc8sta. You can find information
on how to add a friend at http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mesg/use/use-03.html, or
by clicking the help link in the java version of Yahoo!Messenger.
- Now, you simply need to send me a message using Yahoo!Messenger. If I'm online, I will respond within 5 minutes. If I'm not online, your message will be waiting
for me the next time I log in. Feel free to use this medium to converse with your classmates, or myself if I happen to be on-line.
You will get credit for this assignment when I have seen your message. I will most likely respond to your message
with a short message of my own.
I hope that you find this to be a fun and useful way to communicate during the semester. I will generally be online in the evenings and you can, of course, converse with your classmates as often as you like.
