Points: 30
Due Date: 5/8
Reading: Tutorial 9 sessions 9.1 & Tutorial 10 sessions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3
Introduction:
WWW, e-mail, ftp, and telnet are extremely important Internet technologies and have been so for a long time. The Internet though is a quickly changing medium where new tools, and "stuff" are invented every day.
The following lab will give you a glimpse of some of the new things online. There is much more that can be done - that is not in this lab - so feel free to explore on your own.
Questions from the reading:
- Provide a definition for the terms "plug-ins" and "helpers" and state one difference between them.
- What is the file extension of a QuickTime movie file?
- When viewing a webpage, what is one way you know that your browser is missing a required plug-in?
- What is RealPlayer?
- List four different types of plug-ins?
Browser Extensions
Real Player offers many services.
First, visit real.com and download RealPlayer 8 Basic, if you don't already have a version of real player installed. (There's a small link in the middle of the page for the free player.) A FAQ for RealPlayer 8 can be found here. After you have RealPlayer 8 installed, visit http://realguide.real.com/ to view their collection of streaming videos.
- Find a streaming video, send me a link to the page, and provide a brief description of the video.
Macromedia Flash is also making a big scene in web development.
Chances are, you've already experienced a flash movie.
We'll start by downloading Flash.
If you have any problems, the flash FAQ is at http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/open/faq/.
Now, visit http://www.mnh.si.edu/africanvoices/
- What is the quote on the page, and who is quoted?
Connection Speed
In this potion of the lab we will test your connection speed.
Visit http://www.dslreports.com/stest, and selcect a server to use for testing.
Once selected, you will be redirected to a page with a java applet.
Click the Run Test button, and wait for the test to complete.
- Send me the results of running this test. This can be done by highlighting the resulting information with your mouse, holding down the CTRL+C key to copy the information, and then holding down the CTRL+V key to paste the text.
MP3's
Everyone has heard of mp3's in one way or another by now.
Some of you probably have GB's of them saved on your hard drive.
Take a moment by doing a search on the web to find a definition of mp3. (
There will probably be a question about this on the final.)
There are many interfaces that allow you to download mp3's, so I'll leave searching for mp3's up to you.
- Download any mp3 and attach it to this assignment for credit. (Make sure you send this assignment to owens@gaia.ecs.csus.edu, otherwise the message will bounce.)
